ROADSIDE HAWK

Sparrowhawk (buteo magnirostris) The name of the bird I chose is the roadside hawk, in Spanish is called gavilan and its scientific name is Buteo Magnirostris. Its genera is buteo, its species is magnirostris and its family is accipitriade.

This birds chest neck and belly and back are gray and its tail is red. He weights 290 g, and measures from 36 to 41 cm. It has very powerful claws to catch and rip its pray.

He is lonely but some times it flies in little groups. They are the birds with the most developed sight and they usually glide at short distances. Photo: sparrowhawk in Colombian

It is usually found in open grasslands, in the edge of plantations and it lives in trees. This bird is found all over Colombia.
It eats reptiles, big insects, little mammals and some times small birds.

I chose to study this bird because when I saw it I felt attracted by his beauty. I also chose this bird because I think birds of pray are more interesting and impressive than others are.

POEM

Yesterday I was sitting in the grass, while wondering:
Is this magnificent creature only in my dreams or is it real?
Then I realized the world wasn’t the world any more.
Now the world had the shape of a bird.
Then in a moment of glory I saw it cross the sky as an angel.
I saw its glossy gray feathers.
And I Felt as reaching the sky.
